OVERVIEW - Prodigal Son

Scripture References: Luke 15:11-32, page 327 The Story of the Lost Son, in Grades 1-2 Bibles)

Memory Verse: "How great is the love the Father has given us so freely! Now we can be called children of God." I John 3:1 (Found on page 409 of The Little Kids Adventure Bible for Grades 1-2)

Themes: Grace, Forgiveness and Repentance, Consequences of sin, Jealousy

Objectives and Life Application:

  • Children will learn the sequence of the events of the story. (Holy Word Theatre, CyberSpace)
  • Children will explore the concepts of grace, forgiveness and repentance. (Raiders of the Lost Art)
  • Children will explore the context of the story including Jewish inheritance laws, dietary laws, feasts and customs (Bible Quest and Solid Rock Cafe)
  • Children will understand the meaning of the words parable and prodigal. (All)
  • Children will explore the emotions and feelings of the characters and the consequences for bad choices in the story and relate those feelings to their own lives (Sunday Morning Live and Raiders of the Lost Art)
  • Children will locate the story in their Bibles. (All)
  • Children will memorize I John 3:1 (All)

Overview of the Workshops:

Music:
Younger Children: Music can be played during activities or used if you have extra time at the end of a workshop. CDs are available to give to children to take home.

Songs: "Amazing Grace", "Mercy is Falling," "Welcome Back!"

Raiders of the Lost Art: Create wire sculptures depicting grace, forgiveness.

Sunday Morning Live:

Younger: Play Freeze game to understand the feelings expressed in the story.

Older: re-enact a modern day version of the story.

Bible Quest

Explore the story, play games to review the details of the story.

Solid Rock Cafe

Have a celebration feast, make and eat "Prodigal Porkers"

CyberSpace

Older kids: Explore the story through the Prodigal Son CD, Younger kids: Play and Learn Bible to study the story and illustrate sections of the story in sequence.
